Antibiotic Prophylaxis: When and Why

Infective endocarditis (IE), also referred to as bacterial endocarditis (BE), is an infection caused by certain bacteria that enter the bloodstream and settle in the heart lining, a heart valve or a blood vessel. Infective endocarditis is uncommon, but people with some heart conditions have a higher risk of developing it.

Course Objective

  • Describe changes in guidelines for dental management of the client with a total joint replacement.
  • Describe changes in guidelines for dental management of the client with heart valve issues requiring antibiotic prophylaxis.
  • Identify the best evidence studying the effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis before dental treatment to prevent prosthetic joint infection and CA-Infective Endocarditis.
  • Identify potential adverse effects from taking antibiotics indiscriminately.
  • Review the recent ADA position statement and systematic review 2017) regarding the use of antibiotic prophylaxis before dental procedures for individuals with a prosthetic joint or heart condition.
